I've been an artist for twenty years and my main goal throughout that time has been finding new ways to make art more accessible for Black and other People of Color to enrich our everyday lives.

I'm dreamer who is passionate about making beautiful things and creating beautiful moments for those around me.

I'm a first-generation American of Afro-Trinidadian descent that was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. I currently live and work in my cultural home of Trinidad & Tobago.

Melissa A. Matthews Art + Apparel was founded to give Black, and other people of color access to art in their everyday lives. The brand provides the garments and accessories to help people turn their closets into their own personal art galleries because art makes life more beautiful.

The art and patterns that adorn Melissa A. Matthews Art Apparel is adapted from mixed media collages and illustrations that explore the themes of constructing stories, worlds and new ways of being.

This work is heavily influenced by the nuance and duality of dual citizenship in two very different countries and cultures.
